Understanding the Application Process

There are many things to consider when applying for a reception place for your child.

Here is some simple advice for parents to navigate the application process smoothly and make an informed decision on the best school for your child and you.

Do your homework

Start by researching schools in your area. Look at their websites, read their Ofsted reports and check their admissions criteria to see if your child is likely to get a place. Most councils also publish information on how places were allocated in previous years, which can give you a good idea of your chances. Consider visiting schools on their open days to get a feel for the atmosphere, meet the staff, and see the facilities first-hand.

Understanding the Application Process

You must apply through your local council, even if you're interested in a school in a different area. The application process is done online and you'll need to create an account on their admission portal. It is crucial to submit your application by the deadline as applying late can significantly reduce your chances of getting a place at your preferred school.

Most councils let you list a number of schools in order of preference. Be realistic with your choices; list your preferred schools as well as those you are likely to get into. Always include a school in whose catchment you live.  This is because if you're not offered a place at any of your preferred schools, the council will offer you a place at the nearest school with a vacancy, which could be far away.

Please be aware that if a sibling is in their final year of school when you apply, this will not be classified as having a sibling in the school under the admissions criteria.

If you have any questions or queries regarding this process, we are more than happy to support you. Please contact the school office.
